Open Shoot - 10 Nov 2019

Image description

Cheshire Oak Bowmen held the second annual remembrance and club challenge shoot on the 10th November 2019 with 54 archers attending our Cheshire woodland.

The shoot allowed all styles of bow to be shot so long as wooden arrows were used (with the exception of Traditional Bowhunter for which the rules specifically exclude wooden arrows being shot). There was also a challenge shot where Metal Mickey made a reappearance and for 50 pence anyone hitting the nose would receive a £5.00 prize, better odds than you will get in most places although this might reflect the level of challenge. There were only 4 successful archers who achieved this, Peter Wood from Archers of Dolphinholme; Marc Lovell and Colin Cavanagh from Blaidd Field Archers and Mark Patterson from Delamere Field Archers. All contributed their winnings to the poppy appeal and we thank them for the additional donation. Mark Lovell hitting the nose can be seen here in Ken Davies post.

The twice 18 course started at 10:00 am and was paused for 2minutes silence at 11:00 and restarted on whistles around the wood.
The shoot included the barn door trophy previously held by Team firebird in 2018 and four clubs had sufficient entry numbers to meet the requirement to have at least 5 archers. The winning team from Delamere Field archers beat off competition from Team Firebird, Blaidd and Redoubtables. Full results can be seen in the scores at the end of the report.

The feedback from people attending seemed to hit the right note and met with our desire to make the shoot an enjoyable day and for people to have fun and balance this with many painful memories that the November remembrance day can bring.

The day was fair although being November the light was always a challenge being bright blinding sun one minute or dull shadows the next.

Overall the shoot raised fund for the poppy appeal from the raffle, the Metal Mikey challenge and other donations, this was added to the contributions in the collection boxes to make a total of £191.17 and Cheshire Oak Bowmen would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

Cheshire Oak will run this remembrance shoot again next year and clubs will be encouraged to enter teams for the ‘Barn Door Challenge’ again with proceeds to the Poppy Appeal.

Thanks to all who attended and contributed to the money raised, we look forward to welcoming our returning friends and some new visitors at the next shoot which be on the 3rd May 2020. This will be all styles.
